A Little About Murphy, Texas

Good things come in small packages, and at only 5.3 square miles, Murphy, Texas, is a tiny slice of goodness tucked neatly between several other Texas cities. Humble and unassuming, this sweet, little town boasts extraordinary quality of life for its only 15,000 or so inhabitants, the number which continues to increase at a rapid rate.

Murphy had only 3000 residents at of the year 2000, but as its reputation has been catching on, and more people have been drawn to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex for employment opportunities and way of life, Murphy has been growing. While nothing close to a big city, the town has expanded nicely, which has only added to the friendliness and hospitality of the neighborhood. Murphy is essentially a town for exceptional living, where homes are luxurious and affordable, and all of the essentials are available, but the extras are a drive away in the excitement of nearby Dallas. Those looking to be in the center of action need look elsewhere – Murphy is relaxed and easygoing, a place to actually live, and enjoy all that life has to offer.

That’s not to say, though, that nothing’s going on in Murphy. The Town has plenty of sports teams for leisure time, including women’s and men’s baseball, plus football, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball and more. A 12,000 square foot community center opened in 2010 and has a gym, dance classes, seniors groups, tons of classes for kids, a social lounge and more. There are eleven park areas in Murphy, most of which are on wide, open spaces with grassy areas that are great for relaxing. They feature many sporting fields and hiking trails. There are also several restaurants in Murphy for your dining pleasure, with several type of cuisine represented, and there is an annual restaurant night where residents get a taste of the culinary expertise in the community. Murphy published two of its own newspapers which are both also available online and service the needs of the community. As the community expands, many developments are being built to service the newcomers, and this includes a wider array of shopping and service areas as well. With each extension, however, the developers are very careful to preserve the natural landscape of the community and build sites that include large grassy areas and park settings.

Average income is very high at $109,000, and family life is very strong, with 83% married households and 82% with children under age eighteen. With such a small population of children, which has only recently grown whereas previously is was even smaller, Murphy does not have its own educational system, but is instead serviced by the schools in the neighboring towns of Plano and Wylie, which are also fairly small and have excellent educational options. Homes are large in Murphy, with a minimum size lot at 8000 square feet and the average closer to 12,000 square feet.

Shopping in Murphy is limited, but large malls and shopping centers are close by in larger cities – you can get there in under a half an hour, so residents can enjoy full day trips to retail venues, or drop in for an emergency purchase just as easily. A commute to work takes the same time, so breadwinners can obtain fabulous jobs and still be back for a home-cooked dinner with the family every night. And with the wonderful housing options, it’s worth it to be in Murphy.
